Broke: When every paycheck is consumed by living expenses and making minimum payments on all your debts. There is nothing left at the end of the month and your debts aren’t shrinking.
Wealth building: When you have paid off all of your credit card, vehicle, and student loan debt, and are using your savings to acquire assets that generate cashflow.
Financially secure: When your assets generate enough after tax income to cover your living expenses. Imagine how amazing it will feel to know that if you lost your job it’s no big deal because you can pay your bills indefinitely.
Financially free: When your assets generate enough after tax income to cover 3-4x your living expenses. This is the Holy Grail. Once you reach this milestone all your money stress melts away and a world of infinite possibilities opens up to you. You own your time and are free to figure out what your life’s purpose is and pursue it.
I was broke all through my twenties and it wasn’t until my early-thirties that I started to pursue the knowledge I needed to “get my money right”. I paid off all my debts and got serious about saving, started wealth building with real estate and paper assets, became financially secure at 38, and by the time I was 40 I was totally and completely financially free. Forever.
